October Chapter Meeting

Alteryx, Tableau and “The Prof”

Winston Churchill considered Frederick A. Lindemann (“The Prof”) as one of his most valuable advisors during the course of World War II.  Lindemann, professor of physics at Oxford University, was known to have many faults, but he also had one major talent that made him invaluable to Churchill; namely, the ability to extract the most relevant information from a mass of data related to a specific issue and then present that information to Churchill in a form that could be easily understood.  Each day his “S Branch” of the government provided the Prime Minister with accurate and understandable visualizations of the analytical data necessary to support the British war effort.

Today, the traditional role of “accountant” is fast becoming obsolete as it is becoming more and more commoditized by technology.  Only those accountants and finance professionals who differentiate themselves by developing new skills, viewing things from new perspectives, and forming new collaborations will continue to thrive and grow.  One way accounting professionals can establish or maintain their place as valued members of management is by becoming their organization’s “Lindemenn” – the one who can gather, filter, clean, interpret and then visually present decision support information to those tasked with making their organization’s key decisions.

To do so, however, requires tools; tools that can connect to, prep, blend, and analyze data from multiple sources and then convert that information into accurate representations and easily understood visualizations.  IMA Detroit’s October meeting will be devoted to this emerging role for the management accountant with presentations by Alteryx – a leader in data science and self-serve analytics – and Tableau – the leader in visual analytics.

Presenting for Alteryx will be Denis Dudzinski, a graduate of Oakland University and North American Director of Health Care at Alteryx.  In his work, Denis advises non-technical individuals and departments on the tools and practices needed to solve complex data issues.  His customers have ranged from General Motors to Blue Cross/Blue Shield to Marathon Petroleum.

Denis will joined by Sean Mancini, a graduate of Kent State University and Director of Data & Analytics at Clearsulting.  With Clearsulting he provides client organizations with the insight and direction they require to effectively automate and streamline their data processes and to support robust and insightful data analytics.

Presenting for Tableau will be David Wysocki, a graduate of Michigan State University and a Strategic Account Manager at Tableau Software.  In his role, he helps strategic accounts in Michigan make an impact by helping them see and understand their data.  David has more than 25 years of experience in software, hardware and professional services in Analytics.  He has helped customers identify millions of dollars in revenue opportunities and cost savings, and believes in challenging conventional norms to achieve breakthrough results.  He founded Data+Visualization Detroit in 2013, and is an active member in the Business Intelligence community.

The meeting is open to anyone looking to learn more about these two powerful tools.  You will find registration information at: https://www.123signup.com/register?id=hkhjt
