Companies are shifting priorities to strategies that further purpose and drive value.  Customers, employees, policy makers, and citizens, among others, are looking to business not only to produce profits but also to deliver progress on global issues such as corruption, climate change, deforestation, ocean plastic pollution, and the fair use of human talent, which includes embracing diversity and inclusion and employee engagement.  Successful integration of sustainable business practices requires CFO leadership and the ability of the finance function to partner with other corporate functions.

This program will provide the highlights of IMA®’s (Institute of Management Accountants) June 2020 C-Suite report, CFO as Value Creator, Finance Function Partnering for the Integration of Sustainability in Business.  This report provides a framework for CFOs and the finance function to serve as effective business partners for integrating sustainability to meet enterprise-wide goals.  This report is based on IMA’s interviews with corporate finance and accounting professionals regarding their current leadership in their organizations’ sustainable business activities, which are summarized in a companion white paper, CFO as Value Creator: Finance Function Leadership in the Integrated Enterprise.

Shari Helaine Littan CPA, JD is IMA’s Manager of Corporate Reporting Technical Activities, where she contributes thought-leadership content as part of the Research and Policy team.  Most recently, she led the authorship of two interrelated reports: CFO as Value Creator—Finance Function Leadership in The Integrated Enterprise; and Finance Function Partnering for The Integration of Sustainability In Business.

Prior to joining IMA, Ms. Littan was a full-time editor and author for GAAP Reporter on Thomson Reuters Checkpoint, which helps professionals understand and stay current on financial reporting guidelines.  In this role, she also contributed articles on sustainability accounting and integrated reporting.  She also was an adjunct faculty member at New York University’s School of Continuing Professional Studies, where she taught several classes as in accounting, including a self-developed course in writing skills for accounting and finance professionals.

In 2015, she completed the Postgraduate Certificate in Sustainable Business, with commendation, from the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership.  Ms. Littan holds a JD from Boston University School of Law and a BS, magna cum laude, from the School of Management at Binghamton University.  Earlier in her career, Ms. Littan was a practicing lawyer in securities and corporate litigation with a focus on matters that addressed corporate governance and financial reporting.  She began this professional journey on the staff of two international accounting firms.
